Summary #
Smart Search uses AI to find products by understanding what you mean, not just matching exact words. Instead of only finding products with "couch" in the name, Smart Search recognizes that "couch" and "sofa" refer to the same type of furniture and shows you both.
You can even search by describing what you're looking for. Try searching "where I can sit" and Smart Search will show you chairs, sofas, and other seating options.
Who should use this: Sales reps and showroom staff who frequently search for products, especially when working with customers who may use different terminology than your catalog.
Overview #
What Is Smart Search? #
Smart Search is an AI-powered search feature that understands the meaning behind your search terms, not just the exact letters you type. Traditional search only finds products where the text matches exactly. If you search for "couch" but your products are labeled "sofa," traditional search returns nothing.
Smart Search solves this by analyzing the meaning of words and finding related products even when the terminology differs.
How It Works #
When you enable Smart Search, the app creates a searchable index of your products based on their meaning. This process is called "generating embeddings." Once generated, Smart Search can:
- Match synonyms (couch = sofa, lamp = light)
- Understand descriptive searches ("bronze light" finds bronze lamps and lanterns)
- Respond to natural language ("where I can sit" finds seating)
- Find products by color and category combinations ("black sofa")
Note: Smart Search is optional. You can turn it on and off at any time. When turned off, search works exactly as it did before.
Before You Begin #
Before enabling Smart Search, make sure you have:
- Synced your catalog: Smart Search needs product data to work. Go to the gear icon and tap Sync if you haven't recently.
- 5-10 minutes: Generating embeddings for the first time can take several minutes, depending on how many products you have.
- Wi-Fi connection (recommended): While not required, generating embeddings on Wi-Fi is faster and won't use your cellular data.
⚠️ Important: Smart Search requires iOS 15 or later and adds approximately 20-25MB to the app size.
How to Enable Smart Search #
1. Open Search Settings
Tap the gear icon in the top right corner of the catalog screen, then tap Search Settings.
2. Generate Embeddings
Before you can enable Smart Search, you must generate embeddings for your products. Tap the Generate button.
You'll see a progress indicator as the app processes your catalog. This may take 5-10 minutes depending on catalog size. You can continue using the app while this happens in the background.
💡 Tip: Generation happens on your device, not on our servers. This keeps your data private and makes search faster once enabled.
3. Enable Smart Search
Once generation is complete, toggle Enable Smart Search to ON.
Search results will now use Smart Search. Try searching for "couch" or "sofa" to see how it finds both, regardless of which term your products use.
4. Regenerate After Syncing (Important)
Each time you sync new products or updates from the server, you'll need to regenerate embeddings for the new items. Smart Search will still work for existing products, but new products won't appear in Smart Search results until you regenerate.
To regenerate:
- Go to Search Settings
- Tap Generate again
- Wait for the process to complete
Note: We're working on making this automatic in a future update.
Adjusting Search Preferences #
Smart Search lets you control which product information is most important when ranking search results. This is done through Field Weights.
What Are Field Weights?
Field weights tell Smart Search which product details to prioritize. For example, if you increase the weight for Name, products with your search term in the name will appear higher in results.
Available fields:
- Name: The product name or title
- SKU: The product SKU or item number
- Attributes: Custom fields like color, finish, material
- Category: Product category tags
- Description: The full product description (romance copy)
How to Adjust Field Weights
- In Search Settings, you'll see sliders for each field
- Drag the slider right to increase importance (max 10)
- Drag left to decrease importance (min 1)
- Tap Save
Changes take effect immediately. Try a search to see how results change.
💡 Tip: If you search by color frequently ("black sofa", "bronze lamp"), increase the Attributes weight to prioritize color matches.
Note: Field weights only apply when Smart Search is enabled. When Smart Search is off, these settings have no effect.
Best Practices #
Search by Description, Not Just Names
Smart Search excels at descriptive searches. Instead of searching for a specific SKU, try "bronze lantern" or "tufted ottoman" to find products by their features.
Use Natural Language
You can search like you're talking to a person. "Where I can sit" finds seating. "Red couch" finds red sofas and couches.
Combine Color and Category
Search "black sofa" or "white lamp" to find products that match both criteria. Adjust field weights if you want color or category to take priority.
SKU Searches Are Automatic
If you search for something that looks like a SKU (numbers, dashes, specific formats), Smart Search automatically switches to traditional exact-match search. This is faster and more accurate for SKU lookups.
Regenerate After Market Releases
After syncing new products from a market release or catalog update, remember to regenerate embeddings so new items appear in Smart Search results.
Turn It Off If You Prefer Traditional Search
Smart Search is optional. If you prefer exact-match searching, simply toggle it off in Search Settings. You can turn it back on anytime.
Troubleshooting #
New products don't appear in search results after syncing
You need to regenerate embeddings after each sync. Go to Search Settings and tap Generate again.
Can't enable Smart Search (toggle is grayed out)
You must tap Generate first to create embeddings for your products. Once generation completes, the toggle will become available.
Search results seem less accurate than before
Try adjusting field weights to match how your catalog is organized. If your product names are very specific, increase the Name weight. If you search by attributes often, increase Attributes.
Embedding generation is taking a very long time
Generation time depends on catalog size. Catalogs with 5,000+ products may take 10-15 minutes. Make sure you're on a good Wi-Fi connection and the app is open (it can run in the background, but closing the app will pause generation).
Search results include items from the wrong collection
This is expected behavior. Smart Search searches across all products by default. Use filters to narrow results to specific collections, categories, or attributes.
Misspelled searches don't work well
Smart Search has some tolerance for misspellings but works best with correctly spelled words. If you frequently misspell certain terms, try using filters instead.
Field weights don't seem to change anything
Make sure Smart Search is enabled. Field weights only apply when the toggle is ON. Also, if all weights are set to the same value, they effectively cancel out (all equal priority).
Want to disable description field entirely
Currently, the minimum weight is 1 (you can't set it to 0). Set it to 1 and increase other fields to 10 to minimize its impact.
