Which iPad do I need for eCat?

Short Answer #

New versions of eCat typically support iPads running one of the most recent three versions of iPadOS.

When buying a new iPad we recommend purchasing the base version of the most recent model iPad, unless you plan to use the iPad for other storage intensive tasks or just want a larger, faster iPad. eCat works great on the latest base model iPads with the latest processors. Only get a model with more memory if you need it for other purposes or if you have more than 5-6 companies in eCat. Unless you want a larger screen or need more storage and speed for gaming, or personal use it's not necessary to spend more than that on an iPad for eCat.

Purchasing older model iPads is almost never a good investment since they are usually much slower, have a much shorter service life than the latest model iPads and typically have no warranty.

Long Answer #

The latest model iPads have the faster processors and memory, more processing ('RAM') memory, faster WiFi, and sharper displays. This all adds up to time savings for you and a better eCat experience for you and your clients. If your iPad is more than 5-6 years old, it's probably time to update. Don't let an old model, slow iPad distract from your sales presentations!

The latest base model iPad with the minimum level of storage memory is more than sufficient for eCat. Only get a model with more memory if you have more than 5-6 companies in eCat or use it for other purposes like storing lots of photos, movies, etc. And instead of purchasing the cellular option for the iPad, most people find it more economical, flexible, and reliable to use WiFi and their smartphone or portable hot spot for connectivity on the road.

Another consideration is size.

If you mostly do in-person presentations of products where visual impact is very important, the largest iPad Pro is hard to beat, though it's heavier and bulkier than other iPads. If you use eCat mostly in showrooms, the iPad mini is a good choice due to its small size and light weight. The latest model 10.2" iPad or if you want an upgrade 10.9 inch iPad Pro, is a great size/weight compromise, is very fast, and has a beautiful display. The base model is usually more than sufficient for using eCat, but note that Apple is likely to support the iPad Pro models longer due to their more advanced/powerful technology.

When should I upgrade? #

All eCat functionality is currently available on any iPad that runs iPadOS13 or later. eCat will run with reduced functionality on iPads running iPadOS10, 11, and 12. However we do not recommend using older iPads because their limited memory and processor speed will cause eCat to run slowly and possibly with fewer available features. For example, the PDF catalog creator is not available for the iPad2 and original iPad mini due to their insufficient 'RAM' memory and slow processor speeds

The oldest model iPads we recommend using for eCat are the 5th generation iPad, 3rd generation iPad Air, any model or size iPad Pro, and 5th generation iPad Mini. If your iPad is older than these, we suggest upgrading to a new model to ensure the best experience for both you and your customers.
